Tires on BAW BJ212 (БАВ)

The BAW BJ212 is a lightweight off-road vehicle. It has been in production since 1965, having been developed for the Chinese army. The initial design of the model largely repeated the design of the Soviet UAZ-469, but it began to be produced seven years earlier. In 2008, the Chinese military abandoned this vehicle, but the BAIC consortium continued to produce it due to high demand from off-road enthusiasts.

Military Version

The vehicle was developed to replace the outdated GAZ-69, which was actively used in the Chinese army in the 1960s. The off-roader retained a close technical connection with its predecessor, using the same frame and transmission. The fully spring-based suspension was shared with another Soviet model, the UAZ-452. Additionally, a 2.5-liter in-line four-cylinder gasoline engine, a localized version of the UMZ-451, was used as the power unit. This engine was the only one used for the UAZ-369, with which this off-roader has a striking external resemblance. In the early 1970s, a three-door modification was added to the lineup, and in the following decade, the vehicle was equipped with "turn signals," different rear lights, and a tent.

Modernized Version of 2020

Throughout its half-century production cycle, the vehicle has undergone numerous modernizations. However, the most significant and large-scale update was in 2020, which included the vehicle being transferred to a new frame. This new frame allowed for the replacement of leaf springs with coil springs. A 2-link suspension was used at the front, combined with a classic non-independent rear axle. The new frame significantly increased the distance between the axles, adding space to the interior. Most of this space was allocated to the second-row passengers. Another change in the interior was the appearance of new seats and a rear sofa. The design of the front panel, door cards, and steering wheel was completely revised, while maintaining the stylistic features of the previous model.

The changes in the exterior were no less significant. The updated off-roader was distinguished by rectangular door openings. A modification with a fully enclosed body appeared in the lineup, but it lacked a normal rear door, instead, access to the luggage compartment was provided through a hatch under the fixed windshield.

Under the hood is a 1.5-liter in-line four-cylinder gasoline engine with turbocharging, producing 136 horsepower and 200 Nm, developed by Mitsubishi. Its use is due to the tightening of environmental standards, which the predecessor's engines could not meet. The power unit works in conjunction with a 5-speed manual transmission. The all-wheel-drive system is a classic "part-time" with mechanical connection of the front axle. The transmission includes a transfer case with a "low" range. The concept of the vehicle implies its use primarily on dirt surfaces, which should be considered when choosing disks and tires in the "Mosavtoshina" online store.
