Mud tires are not suitable for winter

It's not uncommon to come across car owners of large SUVs who use a single set of tires all year round. Sometimes, these tires are even studded for winter use.

So-called "mud tires" have a tread pattern adapted for deep snow, and therefore, these tires can easily handle snow. That's why you'll often find not only the "M+S" marking but also the "3 mountain peaks with a snowflake" symbol on these tires. From a legal standpoint, everything is fine, and you can use them. However, from the perspective of your safety, it's not worth it, and here's why.

On no tire manufacturer's resource, whether it's a website, catalog, or simple brochure, will you find a recommendation to use such tires in winter. The reason is that on ice, these tires are no better than summer tires. Not surprisingly, the "non-winter" rubber compound and low lamination cannot provide you with the necessary level of safety on ice.

Therefore, it's not worth trying to find a solution for all weather conditions. It's not a fact that winter tires, even if the markings say otherwise, are suitable. Consult with professionals for advice.
