What is a rim?

Tire components are often hidden from us under a layer of protective rubber, but they remain extremely important, and each element is responsible for its own functionality. Today, we'll talk about a component like the tire's rim ring and how important it is.

If you've ever been in a service zone during tire mounting on a disc, you've probably heard loud clunks. These are the tire's rim rings jumping over special protrusions on the discs, which are called humps. It's the rim rings that are responsible for holding the tubeless tire on the disc. The rim ring has a number of features that are important to know, even for an ordinary driver.

1. A tire with a deformed rim ring cannot be operated. You may have seen tires with deformed rim rings. Such tires are not only undesirable but also extremely dangerous to operate. Even in the case of successful tire mounting on the disc, it can be dismounted in case of an extreme maneuver or high load. Therefore, such tires should be avoided.

2. The rim ring area is completely non-repairable. It's all about the rubber that covers the rim ring area. It interacts poorly with adhesives and other repair components. That's why all tire manufacturers and repair material manufacturers consider this area non-repairable. The rule is simple - any cut in the rim ring area means the tire is scrapped, even if you really want to repair it and even if you find someone brave enough to take on this repair.

3. There are different types of rim rings. Regardless of the rim ring's shape, it's essential to remember that their functionality is the same. There can be classic "round" rings, "square" or even "flat" ones, as shown in the photo above. Regardless of the rim ring's shape, it can be damaged during incompetent tire mounting. This is especially true for tires with a low profile. Therefore, it's crucial to choose a service with a good reputation and avoid "one-day" tire mounting services.
