The Yokohama Ice Guard IG60 winter tire is used on passenger cars of various classes. It differs from the previous model with higher efficiency when slowing down on wet and icy surfaces, improved acoustic comfort, and fuel efficiency.
Asymmetric tread with functional zones
The tire's tread pattern features an asymmetric design and several functional zones. One of them is an enlarged longitudinal rib, located closer to the inner side. This element provides traction properties and their stability during straight-line movement. The 3D lamellas cut into the rib, due to their location at different angles, form a pronounced edge effect in all directions.
Two longitudinal ribs, closer to the outer shoulder zone, are composed of large blocks. The traction edges formed by them provide high traction force on snow. The zigzag-shaped grooves located between the blocks further improve the effectiveness of the tread when slowing down on wet surfaces.
Quattro Pyramid Dimple lamellas
The tire's tread is characterized by an extremely dense arrangement of lamellas. It was possible to increase their number due to the original pyramidal shape of the cut walls. They provide the opening of the lamellas at a large angle, increasing the height of the traction edges formed by them. At the same time, a reliable fixation of the cuts in the open position is achieved under the influence of external load, and the mobility of the blocks in which they are cut is limited in all directions. As a result, on icy surfaces, not only reliable but also very stable traction is achieved, combined with fast and accurate reactions of the car to the driver's actions.
Double Microgroove grooves
In addition to the 3D lamellas, the tire's tread contains Double Microgroove grooves. These elements further enhance the traction properties on icy and wet surfaces by drying the contact patch.
"Hygroscopic" compound
The tread is made from an updated rubber compound. Compared to the compound of the previous model, it has an even more pronounced ability to absorb moisture from the road surface. The structure of the rubber compound contains a larger number of micropores, and a moisture-absorbing white gel has appeared in its composition. This allows the tread to effectively capture and retain water, thereby drying the contact patch and providing better traction with slippery surfaces. In addition, the compound still contains oil from orange peel. This component, along with special polymers, enhances the strength of the tread on tear and stretch. As a result, better wear resistance is ensured.
