Today, JSC "YASHZ" (which stands for Yaroslavl Tire Factory) is one of the leading enterprises in Russia that produces tires for vehicles. At least, if we talk about tire factories in the central Russian region. Today, it is part of the "Cordiant" holding, which until 2012 was known under a different name - SIBUR - Russian Tires.
So, at this tire factory, exactly 226 different sizes and models are constantly being produced. The main specialization of the Yaroslavl factory is passenger car tires, the tread of which contains metal cord. The factory's engineers also excel at producing all-steel tires, which are classified as "all steel" in international classification.
The total area occupied by the enterprise is forty-one hectares. For 24 hours, without breaks for sleep and food, five main workshops operate, where tire production takes place. In total, more than three thousand employees work at the factory, each of whom perfectly knows their business and understands the essence of the work in the smallest details. Today, the products of the Yaroslavl Tire Factory are sent to consumers and car manufacturers in twenty countries around the world.
As is often the case, the history of YASHZ does not begin with the production of tires. However, if we take into account that everything started in 1928, then there is nothing surprising - at that time, the USSR Council of People's Commissars decided to build a rubber-asbestos plant in Yaroslavl. It was known as YARAK. In addition to the asbestos shop, there was also a tire shop, a regenerating shop, a mechanical shop, a cord factory, and a thermal power plant.
It is noteworthy that the development of the plant project was undertaken not by a Soviet design bureau, but by an American company called Zeiberling. After the completion of the plant construction (there was an orientation plan), it was planned to produce nine tires at once.
The request for help from American engineers is quite understandable - this was the first object of its kind in the USSR. However, for the sake of fairness, it is worth saying that several Soviet specialists underwent training in the United States.
In total, it took exactly two years to build the plant - from 1930 to 1932. In the same year, it was launched. The first tires were released on the night of November 6-7, 1932.
There are also several memorable events that took place not just anywhere, but precisely at YASHZ - for example, in 1933, they began to develop synthetic rubber here, thanks to which the USSR no longer had to pay for the delivery of expensive raw materials for tires from abroad.
And three years later, the plant received an order to create tires for the first Soviet limousine. If readers recall, this model was called GAZ "M-1". And a year after this event, the production of tires for public transport - trolleybuses - began. This was also done for the first time in the USSR, precisely at YASHZ.
At the end of the 1940s, in 1939, the plant was awarded the Order of Lenin, and a year later it was subjected to disintegration. As a result, the tire factory separated from the plant as an independent enterprise. The order remained with it.
It is especially worth noting the war years - the Yaroslavl Tire Factory was the only one that continued to work throughout the five years of the war with the Nazis. Although, of course, its capacities during this time produced far from tires for trolleybuses, but rather for aviation, artillery, and military vehicles.
However, the plant was completely destroyed on the night of June 9-10, 1943, as a result of an enemy bombing. But the inactivity did not last long - already in September, everything was fully restored, and work continued.
