The summer tire Pirelli P7, produced by one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world, is designed for passenger cars of various classes. This model can be installed on most modern passenger cars, as it is produced in a wide range of sizes, starting from 185/55R15 and ending with 225/60R18. At the same time, the tire has speed indexes H, V, W, and Y, which indicates that the tire is designed for powerful and high-speed cars that can accelerate up to 300 km/h.
Tread design
When developing this model, Italian tire manufacturers aimed to provide the Pirelli P7 tire with excellent handling characteristics at very high speeds. To achieve this goal, the tread of this model was equipped with an asymmetric directional pattern of original design. The main distinguishing feature of this tread is that the pattern seems to consist of two parts, one of which provides excellent traction when driving in a straight line, and the other - for stability when cornering. The inner part of the tread is equipped with a very wide longitudinal rib without any interruptions throughout the tread. Due to this, it was possible to ensure high structural rigidity of the rib, which allows the tire to demonstrate exceptional directional stability even when driving at very high speeds. Additionally, the rigid longitudinal rib significantly reduced the response time to steering wheel turns, giving the handling a distinctive sporty character.
The structure of the two other longitudinal ribs, consisting of closely spaced tread blocks, made it possible to achieve a large contact patch area. Due to this, the tire demonstrates excellent traction on dry surfaces. Additionally, the three wide longitudinal ribs in the central part of the tread allowed for more even distribution of pressure across the entire contact patch area. Thanks to this feature, it was possible to significantly reduce rolling resistance and the likelihood of uneven wear, which significantly extended the tire's service life. As an additional measure aimed at achieving a large contact patch area and even pressure distribution, the Italian tire manufacturers changed the location of the so-called "transition point" in the tire's cross-section. In this model, it is placed significantly closer than before.
Rubber compound
Two variants of the rubber compound with different elasticity were used in this model. The lower base layer has a significantly higher density, since safety when driving at high speeds largely depends on the stability of the tread profile. As a result, the tread is characterized by stability of its shapes, which, especially at high speeds, provides the sporty handling characteristic of this Italian manufacturer's tire products.
The upper layer is distinguished by an increased content of silicon-containing polymers, which made it possible to give it excellent elasticity. Due to this, the tread more closely hugs even the smallest irregularities of the road surface, ensuring more reliable traction, especially in wet conditions. Additionally, the tread made from a rubber compound with a high silica content is characterized by increased resistance to wear, which also extends the tire's service life.
Stability in rainy conditions
Like most other summer models from the Italian tire manufacturer, the Pirelli P7 tire is distinguished by excellent stability and reliability in rainy conditions. This was achieved thanks to the highly efficient design of the tire's drainage system. This important component for any tire consists of four longitudinal drainage grooves and numerous transverse channels. At the same time, the two central drainage grooves are distinguished by more massive sizes than those located closer to the shoulder zones. Another distinguishing feature of the drainage system is the elliptical shape of the transverse channels. This shape made it possible to eliminate turbulence in water flows, which significantly increased the speed of water circulation through these channels. This solution made it possible to significantly improve the efficiency of the entire drainage system as a whole.
Main features of the Pirelli P7 passenger tire
- The optimized design of the asymmetric directional tread pattern provides excellent traction in any conditions;
- A large contact patch area combined with an even load distribution allows for excellent traction characteristics on dry surfaces and reduces the risk of uneven wear;
- The wide central rib with high structural rigidity provides excellent directional stability when driving at high speeds;
- The two-layer tread maintains the stability of its shapes when driving at high speeds, providing sporty handling at the same time.
