The Nordman 5 studded winter tire is not entirely new from the popular Finnish tire manufacturer in our country. The fact is that it is a virtually complete copy of the Hakkapeliitta 5 model, which debuted back in 2006. However, this does not mean that its characteristics do not meet today's requirements. The fact is that many technical solutions used in this model have been applied to the latest Nokian winter tires, which is additional confirmation of the outstanding qualities, including those of the Nordman 5.
"Bear Claw"
This intricate name was given by the marketers of the Finnish manufacturer to the protrusions located on the tread blocks with studs. During movement, the stud literally rests against this protrusion, which allows it to maintain a vertical position. This is optimal for ensuring maximum grip on an icy road, especially when cornering and braking, where the Nordman 5 demonstrates excellent operating qualities.
Round Stud
One of the key features of the Nordman 5 model is the studs, or rather their round shape. This is one of the main differences between the Nordman 5 and the "original", which had four-sided steel studs. It's not easy to call this a disadvantage for one very simple reason. During operation, all four sides wear off very quickly, as a result of which they turn into a regular round stud, which the Nordman 5 has initially.
"Trademark" V-shaped Tread Pattern
In addition to the "bear claw", the Hakkapeliitta 5 "shared" with this model a tread pattern that is fully identical to the original. By the way, the Finns chose not the worst "example to follow" for the Nordman 5. It consists of several functional zones, each of which provides a solution to a certain set of tasks.
In particular, a significant part of the center of the tread pattern is occupied by a very wide longitudinal rib with zigzag-shaped side edges. Since this element has no breaks throughout its length, its structural rigidity is at a very high level, as is the stability to dynamic deformation provided by it. Thanks to this, the Finnish tire makers were able to solve a number of problems, the most important of which are high directional stability, fast response to steering wheel turns, and low rolling resistance. At the same time, the zigzag-shaped edges of the longitudinal rib create a multitude of additional grip edges, which significantly improves the operating characteristics of the tire when driving on snow.
On both sides of this rib, there are many blocks of shoulder zones. They have a quadrangular, elongated shape across the direction of movement, located at a fairly decent distance from each other. As a result, a multitude of so-called "snow catchers" is formed, which, when in contact with the snow-covered road surface, literally catch and hold a significant amount of snow, thereby providing more reliable grip. Then, due to the large distance between the blocks, the tread is quickly cleaned, not allowing "clogging".
Multiple Wavy Lamellae
Like the Hakkapeliitta 5, the tread of this model contains many transversely arranged wavy lamellae. When driving on snow and ice, these elements form an additional multitude of edges, thereby providing more reliable grip on a slippery surface. At the same time, the shape of the walls provides them with dense fixation between each other, which significantly increases the rigidity of the tread blocks, thereby improving handling on dry asphalt.
Main Features of the Nordman 5 Tire
- the tire is developed based on the Hakkapeliitta 5, being its virtually complete copy;
- the trademark V-shaped tread pattern provides excellent grip properties on any winter surface;
- the wide and very rigid central longitudinal rib with zigzag-shaped edges improves stability when driving at high speed, reduces the response time to steering wheel turns, and also reduces rolling resistance, and thus fuel consumption;
- the "bear claw" technology, due to special protrusions, ensures the vertical position of the studs regardless of the characteristics of the road surface and driving mode;
- a multitude of light steel studs in combination with numerous wavy lamellae allow the tire to demonstrate excellent grip properties on icy roads.
