The winter passenger non-studded tire Nokian WR G2 SUV was initially created for the climatic conditions of European countries, where winter is characterized by frequent temperature transitions from plus to minus and back. Therefore, this model is distinguished by increased resistance to slushplaning, i.e. the tire easily copes with the removal of not only water but also thawed snow from the contact patch. In addition, the tire is beneficially distinguished by a very wide range of tire sizes, which starts with 235/75R15 and ends with 295/30R22, allowing it to be installed on most modern SUV and crossover models.
Asymmetric tread pattern of the Scandinavian tire
Since the Finnish company's specialists had a rather difficult task of ensuring excellent operational characteristics in very different road conditions, they preferred to use a tread with an asymmetric directed pattern design. The main characteristic feature of this design is a different structure of the tread pattern on the inner and outer sides of the tread. It is precisely due to this technical solution that the Nokian WRG2 SUV tire demonstrates excellent traction, both on dry and wet road surfaces.
"Anti-slush" edge
As mentioned earlier, this model is designed for European winter conditions, which are characterized by frequent thaws. For such conditions, a large amount of thawed snow is characteristic, which is quite difficult to remove from the contact patch. To ensure excellent traction when driving on snowy slush, Finnish specialists equipped the shoulder area, located on the inner side of the tread, with a special design. The distinctive feature of this design is the wedge-shaped profile of the shoulder area, which more effectively removes heavy wet snow, as well as water from the contact patch, which significantly improved the performance of the drainage system.
Polished drainage grooves
Thanks to this original design solution, it was possible not only to give the Nokian WR G2 SUV tire a more stylish appearance but also to significantly improve the efficiency of the drainage system. The smooth polished surface of the drainage grooves allows the tread to more easily get rid of both water in the contact patch and the heavy mass of snow.
3D lamellas
Another innovation that appeared in this model is 3D lamellas located on the surface of the tread blocks. One of the main functional purposes of this tread element is to form additional numerous sharp edges that, easily penetrating the water film on the surface of the ice, provide more reliable traction in icy conditions. Another function performed by these lamellas is to ensure high structural rigidity of the tread blocks on which they are located. Due to this, it is possible to ensure excellent handling when driving on dry roads.
Rubber compound with rapeseed oil
The tread of this model is made from an innovative rubber compound that features the presence of natural rapeseed oil in its composition, which does not contain any toxic or carcinogenic chemicals. With the help of rapeseed oil, it was possible to improve not only the level of environmental safety but also significantly improve the resistance of the tread to aggressive external influences. In addition to rapeseed, the rubber compound of this tire is characterized by a high content of silicon-containing components - silica. Thanks to this substance, the tire demonstrates excellent elasticity at low temperatures, which allows the tread to more closely fit all the irregularities of the snowy and icy surface, thereby ensuring more reliable traction. Moreover, the new composition of the rubber compound made it possible to significantly reduce rolling resistance, which, in turn, significantly improved fuel efficiency.
