The Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 winter non-studded passenger tire is perfectly suited for use in mild European winters, characterized by frequent temperature fluctuations from plus to minus and back. This model, like all tires with the Pilot prefix, is designed primarily for powerful high-speed sedans and sports coupes. The tire features a wide range of sizes, including several dozen options with rim sizes from 17 to 21 inches. The speed indices H, V, and W hint at the tire's exceptional capabilities.
This model replaces the very successful Pilot Alpin PA3 tire, which has earned the trust of European car enthusiasts due to its excellent performance characteristics. Like its predecessor, the tire's tread features an asymmetric directional pattern with an original design. The development of this pattern utilized technical solutions that have proven effective in other models, including the Pilot Alpin PA3. In particular, the Variable Thickness Sipe (VTS) technology was used, which provides additional stiffness to the tread blocks, essential for a winter tire. When the tire comes into contact with the surface, the sipe walls lock in place, significantly improving the stiffness of the tread blocks and ensuring the tire's responsiveness and traction on dry surfaces.
Another technology used in the development of the tread pattern is Full Active Tread. This technology, also proven effective in other winter tire models, represents a new type of tread where all elements work together as a single system to ensure the highest efficiency of the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 tire in winter conditions. Thanks to this technology, it was possible to improve all the tire's main characteristics, including traction on slippery surfaces, directional stability, and braking efficiency on snow and ice.
When developing the tread block configuration, another technology, Advanced Tread Block, was used. The combination of a special block shape and carefully calculated placement allows these tread elements to work like a pump, collecting water from the contact patch and directing it through transverse drainage channels to the outside. This has achieved excellent resistance to aquaplaning.
It is also worth noting another technological solution used in this tire. As part of the StabiliGrip technology, the tire's tread is equipped with two types of extended-length sipes, which, due to their numerous sharp edges, enhance the so-called "claw effect," improving traction on ice in all directions.
Key Features of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4
- The unique design of the asymmetric directional tread pattern, created using the Full Active Tread technology, allows for the creation of a single system from individual tread elements, significantly improving all the tire's main characteristics;
- High resistance to aquaplaning, thanks to the high efficiency of the drainage system, ensured by the Advanced Tread Block technology;
- The rubber compound with increased silica content gives the tire excellent elasticity at negative temperatures, while also increasing the tread's resistance to wear.
