The Michelin Ivalo winter tire is designed for operation in harsh climatic conditions, where roads are covered with snow, ice, or a slushy mixture of thawed snow and water for most of the season. It belongs to the category of friction models, and the tread design provides the possibility of studding, which allows the tire to be adapted to specific conditions.
The tread is made in a directional design with wide V-shaped drainage channels. This pattern not only promotes the rapid removal of snow and water from the contact zone but also forms many sharp edges that work on traction when driving on loose snow. The central part of the tread has a dense system of connecting grooves, which increases the number of traction edges and contributes to the stability of the vehicle's behavior on a straight line. The shoulder areas, in turn, are reinforced with massive blocks that ensure confident cornering and prevent excessive slipping on packed snow or icy asphalt.
One of the key elements of the design is the Helio+ technology, which uses a mixture of silica dioxide and natural plant-based oils in the rubber compound. This allows the compound to retain its elasticity even at extremely low temperatures, providing stable traction and effective braking on icy roads. At the same time, this mixture is resistant to wear and microcracks, extending the life of the tire and preserving its characteristics throughout the entire period of operation.
Special attention is also paid to the 3D lamellas, which have a complex geometric profile with fixing walls. When in contact with the surface, these lamellas do not close completely, creating an additional system of small edges that "bite" into ice or compacted snow. The rigid connections between the tread blocks reduce the mobility of the elements, which has a positive effect on handling accuracy and reduces noise levels when driving on asphalt.
