The Avon Ice Touring non-studded winter tire is designed primarily for compact passenger cars, most of which are operated in urban conditions. This model is offered in nearly two dozen sizes for wheels with a rim diameter of 14 to 15 inches. At the same time, three 15-inch sizes are suitable for installation on compact crossovers or light trucks and minivans.
Asymmetric Tread Pattern
One of the distinctive features of this model is its excellent grip on any winter surface, from ice to dirty and wet asphalt. Such versatility was achieved largely due to the use of an original tread pattern with an asymmetric arrangement of elements.
Snow Groove Technology
To provide the tire with excellent grip on snow, the company's specialists applied a patented development - Snow Groove technology. It consists of a special tread structure with elements that allow it to capture snow, significantly improving the tire's grip on a snowy surface. However, this is only an additional measure, since the main role in ensuring grip on snow is played by a multitude of four-sided blocks located on both the outer and inner sides of the tread.
Excellent Directional Stability
The Avon Ice Touring tread pattern, in addition to the asymmetric arrangement of elements, features five longitudinal ribs, one of which, located on the outer side, has a double structure. Due to the fact that both "halves" of this element are continuous along their entire length, they have high resistance to deformation changes that occur during movement. The practical result of this technical solution is excellent directional stability, as well as fast and precise reactions to steering wheel turns.
Excellent Resistance to Aquaplaning and Slushplaning
Due to the sufficiently open design of the asymmetric tread pattern of this tire, the company's specialists were able to equip it with a highly efficient drainage system. It consists of three very wide longitudinal grooves that separate the tread blocks from each other, as well as numerous transverse channels. The large size of the drainage system components allows it to easily handle the removal of not only a huge amount of water but also more heavy masses of slush. As a result, the tire demonstrates excellent grip, both on wet asphalt and on thawing snow.
Good Grip on Icy Surfaces
Despite the absence of studs, this tire is favorably distinguished by good grip not only on snow but also on ice. Such capabilities appeared due to special tread elements - lamellas. During movement, they form a countless number of grip edges, which allows the tire to "grip" even the smallest irregularities on the surface of the icy road.
High Level of Acoustic Comfort
Although the tread pattern contains a huge number of grip edges, the company's specialists were able to provide the tire with a sufficiently high level of acoustic comfort. To do this, all tread blocks have rounded corners and different sizes, and they themselves are arranged with a different pitch relative to each other. This made it possible to significantly reduce the level of resonant noises and vibrations that occur during movement. As an additional measure, the walls of the drainage groove located on the outer side of the tread were given a serrated shape. This made it possible to reduce the noise generated by the air passing through it at a very high speed.
Main Features of the Avon Ice Touring Model
- asymmetric tread pattern provides excellent grip on any winter surface, from snow and ice to dirty and wet asphalt;
- rubber compound with a high content of silicon-containing components provides additional grip on slippery surfaces, as well as increased resistance to abrasive wear;
- a multitude of tread blocks allow the tire to demonstrate excellent traction and grip on snow;
- countless lamellas completely neutralize the absence of studs, providing reliable behavior on icy roads;
- a large number of grip edges provide unparalleled effectiveness of braking on slippery roads.
