The beginning of the history

In 1863, a Dutchman named Koop founded several workshops in Zaporizhzhia (then Alexandrov) that specialized in the production of agricultural equipment and various utensils. Over time, production was expanded, and in 1923, it received the name "Communar". It was from its assembly lines that combines first began to be produced, which were used throughout the vast country. As for car manufacturing, the development of this direction occurred only in the early 1960s. It was then that the ZAZ-965 and subsequent 966 appeared. This was the famous "hunchbacked" "Zaporozhets", which became the most affordable car of its time. Note that this model was able to last until 1994, undergoing numerous modifications. At the same time, the total number of cars produced was over 3.5 million units.

In 1987, the plant mastered a new model called "Tavria". This was a three-door sedan with a classic layout (front engine with liquid cooling). And in 1999, the production of another model, the "Slavuta", began. This was a five-door sedan that most closely resembled modern automotive products.

Further development

After the collapse of the USSR and Ukraine's independence, the plant gradually increased its production, producing more cars every year. However, the difficult situation forced the search for foreign partners. These became Daewoo and General Motors. Having mastered the assembly of some of their models, ZAZ began to mark them with its emblem. This move improved the situation and allowed the company to enter the international market. Note that the manufacturer also produced its own models. Nevertheless, even annual production volumes of 250,000 units did not save the situation. In 2018, a bankruptcy application was filed.

Despite the fact that the brand has already ceased to exist, its "products" are actively used throughout the post-Soviet space.
