Serial production of the VinFast VF8 began in 2022. Instead of overloaded decorative elements, designers used relatively clean body panel surfaces, complex lighting, and a distinctive V-shaped LED strip that runs across the entire front.

A favorable difference is the ratio of body length to wheelbase size - 4750 versus 2950 mm. The significant distance between the axles provides passengers in the second row with a reserve of space in the leg area. This made it possible to increase the size of the traction battery compartment. In combination with the body, bottom, and active aerodynamic elements, this made it possible to significantly increase the range.

Another feature is the absence of direct borrowing of body design from European and American "classmates". In Pininfarina, they managed to give it an authentic visual style that combines the features of a classic crossover and modern electric vehicles. This is especially noticeable in the body proportions: the roof line is less coupe-like than that of many competitors, which has a positive effect on the reserve of space above the heads of rear passengers.

Interior without a dashboard

The interior stands out for the absence of a classic dashboard. Almost all information is displayed on a projection display under the windshield with partial duplication on a 16-inch multimedia display. This solution is only partially reminiscent of "Tesla" due to a different interface - with a large number of constantly available functions and a reduced number of nested menus. It is worth noting the practically absent animation and visual effects, which improved the system's performance and had a positive effect on the readability of information. Additionally, voice control with support for several languages and remote software updates over the air are provided.

As a result, the front console has a pronounced minimalist style with an emphasis on horizontal lines, which visually expand the cabin. In the top version, this is added to by natural leather trim, seat ventilation, a panoramic roof, and multi-zone "atmospheric" lighting. The central tunnel is almost completely freed from physical controls, and the transmission selector is made in the form of a block with physical buttons. In the base version, the crossover cannot be called ascetic. Here, there is an adaptive cruise control, a lane keeping system, and automatic braking.

Two powertrain versions

Starting from the standard version of this car, a powerplant with two electric motors is offered - one for each axle. The base version with the speaking name Eco develops up to 353 hp and 500 Nm in peak. An alternative to it is the Plus modification with 408 hp and 620 Nm. In both cases, the traction is transmitted to the wheels through a 1-stage planetary reducer.

In addition to power, both versions differ in the capacity of the traction battery. In the "base" version, an 82 kWh battery is used, and in the top versions - an 87 kWh battery, which provides a range of up to 450 kilometers. The calibration of the power electronics deserves special attention. Unlike many Chinese "classmates" with a sharp reaction to the accelerator, the VF8 is set up more smoothly. Even with high power, the traction is supplied without characteristic jerks, which is especially noticeable in city mode and when driving on slippery surfaces. It is worth noting the use of a recovery system with several operating modes, in the most aggressive of which it is possible to move using only the accelerator pedal. Another feature is the use of an onboard charger designed to work with power sources up to 150 kW. This makes it possible to replenish the battery charge from 10 to 70% in approximately 30-35 minutes.

Suspension and handling features

The powertrain settings correspond to the chassis layout. At the front, McPherson struts are used, and at the rear - a multi-link structure. Despite the impressive mass, exceeding 2.4 tons, the VF8 demonstrates a fairly collected behavior at high speed. The low center of gravity, due to the location of the battery in the floor, made it possible to reduce leaning in turns. The suspension did not become too stiff, like that of some Chinese competitors, which are calculated mainly for ideal urban coverage. To a significant extent, such a character of manageability is achieved due to the use of 19-21-inch wheels with a profile height of 55-45% in the standard equipment. Here, tires with reinforced sidewalls and an optimized tread pattern are used, which minimizes energy losses but can maintain traction during intense longitudinal acceleration.
