The Roewe brand is owned by Shanghai-based SAIC Motor Corporation, which created it in 2006. The main activity was planned to be the production of luxury cars, which were to be based on models from the defunct British manufacturer MG Rover. Hence the name, which is very similar to Rover. Note that the Chinese company wanted to acquire the original name, but was unable to do so. Therefore, they had to look for other ways. As a result, the Roewe brand emerged.

A bit of history

In 2005, SAIC intended to buy all the assets of "MG Rover". In the end, they only got a part of it, including the Rover 75 and 25 models. The rest was acquired by another Chinese company, Nanjing Auto. However, in 2007, the two manufacturers merged, and the Shanghai-based corporation gained access to the full range of Rover models and production facilities.

With the support of the British company "Ricardo", which specializes in engineering development, the Chinese manufacturer brought its first model, the 750, to the market. Its basis was the Rover 75, which was modernized both internally and externally. Note that in 2007, Ricardo was also acquired by the Chinese corporation and turned into an engineering center, where 200 employees from MG Rover work.

Model range

The company is actively developing several areas at once: cars with classic internal combustion engines and electric vehicles. At the same time, its models are represented by both crossovers (such as the RX9, D5X, and others) and sedans (Clever, D7, and others). Recently, some of them have been converted to electric motors.

The company does not yet have an official representative office in Russia, but this is a matter of time.
