Rivian is an American automaker that specializes in the production of electric off-road vehicles, pickup trucks, and commercial trucks. Despite being founded in 2009, the company is still in its early stages of development.

History

Mainstream Motors was the original name of the small production company founded by Robert Scaringe. In 2011, the company was renamed Rivian Automotive and set its course on creating electric vehicles. The first prototype was a sports car called the R1, but the project was eventually closed, and Robert shifted the company's focus to creating promising electric vehicles.

After securing significant investments in 2015, the company substantially expanded its production and research facilities. At the same time, the company finally determined its direction towards creating electric vehicles and the accompanying infrastructure, i.e., a network of charging stations. Considerable attention was also paid to autonomous driving systems.

In 2016, negotiations were held, and in 2017, the company purchased an already functioning auto plant from Mitsubishi. This allowed Rivian to acquire production capacity in the shortest possible time, which was already fully ready for launch. Thanks to this, the company was able to quickly create two models of pickup trucks and off-road vehicles, which were named R1T and R1S, respectively. Notably, customer deliveries of the vehicles only began in 2021. At the same time, the company managed to surpass all major manufacturers by presenting a fully operational electric pickup truck. This was achieved despite the shortage of electronic components that was observed at that time.

It is worth noting that in 2022, the manufacturer was forced to increase the cost of its products by almost 20%. Moreover, this was done retroactively, putting customers who had already placed pre-orders in a difficult position. This negatively affected the company's reputation, which ultimately returned the cost of its vehicles to their original prices for those who had already made an order.

Partnership with Amazon

As one of the investors, Amazon signed a contract with Rivian for the supply of 100,000 electric vans. According to the plans, the large US retail network wants to update its entire fleet and switch to fully renewable energy by 2030. Additionally, such transport should reduce delivery costs and contribute to improving the ecology in the country.

Present Day

Currently, the company is engaged in the development of not only new models but also accompanying attributes, such as charging networks and autonomous driving systems. Recently, a new R2 platform was presented, which will be the basis for the next generation of vehicles.

In the RF, Rivian cars are not yet officially represented. However, this does not prevent some car enthusiasts from already exploring their possibilities on Russian roads.
