Tires on LEVC VN5 (ЛЕВС)
The commercial van LEVC VN5 made its debut in 2020. The model became the first implemented project of the British brand after coming under the control of the Chinese holding company Geely. The car was created as a specialized vehicle for delivery on the "last mile" in megacities with strict environmental restrictions. In addition, the car was notable for its low operating costs and high level of comfort for the driver. The concept was based on the use of a hybrid power plant, in which the traction on the wheels was supplied by an electric motor, and a gasoline engine was used as a generator to charge the battery. Technically, the model was unified with the London cab LEVC TX.Platform Features
Against the background of European "classmates", the VN5 was noticeably distinguished by the technical solutions applied in it. Instead of a classic bearing body, an aluminum spatial structure is used here, supplemented by external composite panels. This solution made it possible to reduce the mass, increase the resistance to corrosion, and at the same time provide high body strength for bending and torsion. The wheelbase is 3140 mm, and the overall length exceeds 5.2 m. The turning radius, given such dimensions, turned out to be unusually small - about 10 meters. This was due to the design of the front suspension, the kinematics of which provided a large angle of wheel rotation.
The volume of the cargo compartment reaches 5.5 cubic meters, the payload capacity exceeds 800 kg, and its dimensions are designed for the transportation of two europallets. Sliding side doors are provided on both sides, and the rear swing doors open almost 180 degrees, making it easier to work on loading. The floor of the cargo compartment is located relatively low, so loading heavy boxes requires less effort.
The sound insulation deserves special attention. Unlike most commercial models, where acoustic comfort is usually sacrificed to cargo capabilities, the British van received motor shield insulation, additional damping materials, and multi-layer door seals. As a result, even when driving on highways, the noise level in the cabin is significantly lower than that of most "classmates".
Power Plant
Along with the spatial frame, a feature was the hybrid power plant. The front wheels are driven by an electric motor with a power of 204 hp and a torque of 362 Nm. A turbocharged 1.5-liter gasoline "trio" developed with the participation of Volvo is used as a generator. It has no direct mechanical connection with the wheels and serves exclusively for the production of electricity, which is directed to charge the traction battery with a capacity of 31 kWh. If necessary, the van can move exclusively on electricity, but within a range of 100 km. Connecting the ICE increases the range to 480 km. The transmission of traction to the wheels is carried out through a planetary reducer, which provides linear control, virtually no noise when accelerating.
The maximum speed is limited to around 129 km/h, however, the developers' priority was not high dynamics, but stable operation under daily commercial loads.
The onboard charging device supports operation with DC power sources up to 50 kW. In optimal conditions, replenishing the charge from 0 to 80% takes about 30-35 minutes. When using an AC power source with a capacity of 22 kW, charging takes approximately one and a half hours.
Driver Comfort
The interior design has a lot in common not with utilitarian commercial equipment, but with modern crossovers. The front console is executed in a characteristic brand style with a vertically oriented display in the central part of the multimedia diagonal of 9 inches. Another wide-format screen is used as a dashboard.
The combination of a vertical landing, an enlarged windshield, and front racks located at a small angle provides excellent visibility from the inside. In the top versions, enlarged rearview mirrors with wide-angle sections are supplemented with cameras with a circular view. Also, the equipment includes heated seats, climate control, keyless access, navigation, support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as several USB connectors for connecting mobile devices. A separate advantage was the developed storage system: in the cabin, there are many niches, large pockets, and compartments for documents.
Features in Use
Already in the standard equipment, the car offers a wide range of electronic assistants - an automatic braking system, lane control, driver fatigue monitoring, and road sign recognition. This is supplemented by a suspension with settings, where the emphasis is on smooth running. At the front, an independent scheme with McPherson struts is used, at the rear - a multi-link design. Such a solution is atypical for the segment, where the presence of semi-dependent beams and leaf springs is the standard. This chassis layout is complemented by 16- and 17-inch wheels, as well as tires with a profile height of 65 and 55%, respectively. These products are distinguished by reinforced sidewalls and a rubber compound of the tread with increased resistance to overheating, wear, and cracking. In the online store "Mosavtoshina", it is convenient to choose both reinforced tires for daily "delivery" work and positions designed for operation in conditions of poor roads and high loads.
