The Ineos brand belongs to a petrochemical holding company in the UK, with its headquarters in London. The parent company was formed in 1992, and the brand itself in 1998. Since then, a large number of acquisitions have been carried out, resulting in the formation of a major player on the international stage.

History

In 2019, Ineos Automotive Ltd (a specially created division for the development of cars) entered into a contract with the German BMW. The main goal was to create an off-road vehicle that could become an analogue of the Land Rover Defender and surpass it. The Magna Steyr company was chosen for engineering support. Note that the car was named Grenadier (after the pub where the owner of the parent company often met with his friends). It was assumed that up to 25,000 units would be produced per year. For this purpose, the management negotiated with Mercedes to buy the Smart plant in France and re-equip it for the production of the new car. As a result, the production facilities were purchased, and the first units rolled off the assembly line in 2022.

A little about technical aspects

The Grenadier uses BMW engines (diesel and gasoline) with a volume of 3 liters as power units. Both engines are combined with an automatic transmission with 8 speeds, which has increased power. The car has a permanent all-wheel drive, which is implemented through a two-speed "transfer case".

It is worth noting that the company is currently developing an electric version of the "Grenadier", which may appear in 2026. For this, they are collaborating with Magna International (formerly worked with Mercedes, Jaguar, BMW, and Fisker).

Developments are also underway on hydrogen engines, but this is a long-term perspective, and it's too early to talk about it.
