The Denza automobile brand belongs to the joint venture Shenzhen BYD New Energy Co., Ltd., established in May 2010 by Chinese BYD and Mercedes-Benz. The brand is used for passenger cars with a fully electric powertrain, which the manufacturer positions as luxury class models.

History

On March 1, 2010, BYD Auto and Daimler AG signed a memorandum with a "roadmap" for the joint development and production of electric vehicles with the formation of a joint venture with equal ownership rights. In March 2012, the Denza brand was established. Its name is derived from the Chinese "tengshi" and has several translation options. Most often it is "growing strength and momentum", "wind power", much less often - "twisted circumstances". In April of the same year, the company presented the concept of the debut model of the new brand. In December 2014, the Denza EV, a compact car, was launched into mass production. The design of this and subsequent models of the brand was developed with significant participation of Mercedes-Benz specialists. Nevertheless, this did not bring any significant market advantages to the brand.

In February 2021, information about a crisis between the co-owners of Denza appeared in the German business press. The brand's cars did not meet Mercedes-Benz's expectations, which made their future uncertain. The outcome was changes in the structure of the joint venture and the model line. The crossover X, which did not gain significant sales, was discontinued, the alliance was renamed Shenzhen Denza New Energy Vehicle Co., Ltd., and Mercedes-Benz reduced its stake from 50% to 10% in favor of the Chinese partner.

The first model after the restructuring was the D9 minivan, presented in August 2022. At the same time, the company began to expand its dealership network in China, opening more than 200 new centers. In March 2023, the N7 and N8 crossovers went on sale there, which use the platform and components of the discontinued X model.
