The Chinese automaker BAW was formerly a subsidiary of BAIC Group. In 2015, the company was sold to private investors, and today it is engaged in the production of not only civilian but also military vehicles.

History

The BAW company has its history dating back to the first automobile accessories plant built in Beijing in 1953. Five years later, the enterprise was modernized and began producing cars, and it was renamed the Beijing Automobile Works. In 1987, the company merged with a motorcycle plant also located in the capital of China, and again changed its name to become the United Automobile and Motorcycle Company BAM. In its current form, it has existed since 2001, when the company underwent another restructuring. In addition to Beijing Automobile Works, the holding company included a joint venture with Jeep, as well as commercial vehicle manufacturers Beijing Automobile Assembly and Foton Motor. In 2010, this collection of automobile plants became part of the even larger BAIC. In May 2020, BAIC sold its stake in BAW to the private company Qingdao Fulu Investment Holding Group, which was engaged in the production of urban electric vehicles. In April 2023, BAW was again acquired by Shandong Weiqiao Pioneering Group, a private company that produces textile and aluminum products.

BAW in Russia

In our country, the BAW company appeared as early as 2006 and is known primarily as a manufacturer of commercial vehicles. In the same year, an assembly plant was built in Ulyanovsk, which produced the light city truck Fenix, which is a licensed copy of the Isuzu N. In 2011, a full-fledged plant was launched, where the level of localization was 63%. Four years later, there was a sharp drop in sales of this model, which continued until 2017, during which time only 91 trucks were sold. In the same year, the joint venture was liquidated. The production facilities were acquired by the Russian company SIMAZ, which began producing small-capacity buses based on Isuzu commercial vehicles. In 2023, BAW re-entered the Russian market, becoming a partner of the Bryansk company "BN-Motors", which organized the production of light trucks BAW Worker 1 and Worker II, which differ from each other in their single- and double-row cabins, respectively. These commercial vehicles are designed for relatively complex operating conditions in urban environments, which imposes special requirements on the tires used. Such tires are widely represented in the company "Mosavtoshina".
