Nokian winter tires approved for Rivian electric vehicles

Rivian has approved the Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV winter tires in size 275/50 R22 for use on their electric vehicles built on the R1 platform, namely the R1S SUV and R1T pickup truck. Now, Nokian's winter tires have received the status of "official tires" from Rivian and are available on the car manufacturer's online platform for $2,216 per set, including installation.

Nokian Hakkapeliitta R5 SUV is a latest-generation friction winter tire from the Finnish brand, representing a version of the passenger R5 designed specifically for SUVs and pickup trucks. The Electric Fit marking indicates that the tires have been optimized for use on electric cars and therefore have increased load-carrying capacity and the ability to withstand the stresses associated with increased torque. The Green Trace rubber compound also reduces rolling resistance, allowing for more kilometers to be driven between charges. Additionally, the Arctic Grip crystals in the compound increase traction, working like numerous microscopic spikes, and the sidewalls have been reinforced with aramid fibers to increase strength and puncture resistance.

The partnership with Rivian is the first of its kind for Nokian in North America, and Tyler Scott, the tire company's key account manager, noted that "we are very pleased to have started cooperating with Rivian, and for us, this is an opportunity to offer our flagship non-studded winter tires to drivers who want to utilize the full potential of their vehicle".
