Winter tires for electric vehicles
Tires for Electric Vehicles — this is a special topic for discussion, as they can significantly affect the range due to reduced rolling resistance. But separately, it is worth dwelling on the winter segment of tires for electric vehicles. The fact is that with the disappearance of the internal combustion engine, tires become the noisiest element of the vehicle. As we wrote earlier, not only the tire itself makes noise. Much depends on the type of road surface and the grain size of the asphalt. But nevertheless, the significantly greater negative profile (the combination of all water channels and lamellas) of winter tires contributes to increased noise.
In addition, most winter tires have a directional tread pattern, which in itself is the noisiest pattern among the existing ones.
The noise reduction system available on the tire market can help, but among the major manufacturers in winter tires, only Nokian has implemented this technology in the Nokian Tyres Hakkapeliitta 10 EV tires. Given the current situation on the market and the complexity of relationships with foreign manufacturers, the supply and production of this model remain in question.
Two main points should be noted:
1. Tires, especially winter ones, remain the noisiest element for electric vehicles. At the same time, it is essential to remember that noise is not hazardous to health. A noisy winter tire most often compensates for this drawback with excellent traction on snow and ice.
2. Tires with noise reduction technologies are preferable, as they really work noticeably. There are various solutions for self-noise insulation of tires, but it should be remembered that the contact of rubber with glue can negatively affect the state of the sealing layer, and subsequently, the tire may lose pressure.
