What is the purpose of tire tread?

A simple question, it would seem? The answer is in the title. Protection - protection. Therefore, protect the tires from damage, sharp stones, and other hazards. Yes, that's right, but not only.

The tread, in addition to its protective function, should also effectively drain the contact patch when driving on a wet surface. That's why the tread has a pattern, and its type is designed to efficiently and quickly drain water. At the same time, it retains useful rubber contact in dry weather.

The tread compound also affects rolling resistance, and therefore, fuel consumption. That's why, against the backdrop of its durability and water drainage, there is a need to counteract excessive heat.

This seems quite logical, but it's something that many car owners forget. As the tread wears out, its protective functions decrease. There is a high likelihood that you will be able to damage the protective rubber layer by driving over broken glass or sharp stones. There are more chances of hydroplaning at your usual speed of 80 km/h on your usual puddle on the way to work. Don't forget that with every kilometer, the characteristics of the tires and, specifically, the tread - decrease. This is a reason to change the tires earlier, before the remaining depth reaches the legal indicators. How much earlier - it's up to you to decide.
