In Russia, a standard for carcinogenic safety of tires has been developed

Scientists from the laboratory of forest chemistry at Lobachevsky University (Nizhny Novgorod) have developed a national standard for the carcinogenic safety of automobile tires. This is reported by the "Zhivem v Nizhnem" portal, citing the words of the laboratory head, Alexander Shchepalov.

About 10% of the raw materials used in tire production are various technological oils, which may contain carcinogenic substances that enter the environment during tire operation.

"The particles that appear when tires are worn have a size that allows them to remain in the air near the road for several hours. People who are nearby inhale these particles. The situation is even more dangerous when a person runs along the road. If the bronchi are open, particles enter the body more actively. These substances do not disappear anywhere and remain in the body forever," Shchepalov said.

In many countries, there are standards for the content of carcinogenic substances in raw materials for the tire industry, but in Russia, there are no such requirements. According to the scientists' estimates, about 98% of tires produced in Russia do not contain hazardous oils, but the situation is different with tires from China.

"Domestic companies find it difficult to compete with Chinese manufacturers due to the lower price. However, imported products have a problem with carcinogen content. Last year, we checked about three dozen Chinese tires, and approximately ten of them were found to contain carcinogenic substances," Shchepalov noted.

The new standard is designed to remove tires with carcinogenic substances from the Russian market, and scientists hope that the government decree will be approved, which is currently at the stage of regulatory impact assessment. If the law is adopted, tires will be subject to mandatory certification.

Earlier, at Lobachevsky University, a new additive for automobile tires was developed.
