Toyo has developed new tires for electric buses
Toyo Tire is introducing to the Japanese market a new tire, Toyo Nanoenergy M648 EV, specifically designed for electric buses, which are now being massively introduced in the country.
Since electric buses have increased weight and engine torque, the load on the tires when starting, accelerating and braking is increased, so the developers had to improve the durability of the tread. In addition, the range of travel on a single charge is of great importance, which also requires a reduction in rolling resistance of the tires, increasing the efficiency of energy consumption, and, as Toyo says, the new tire for urban and intercity routes meets both of these requirements.
The company adds that, although increasing fuel efficiency and increasing wear resistance are usually conflicting goals, a comprehensive approach, including optimization of materials, design and tread pattern, allowed to improve both characteristics, and compared to Toyo M638, rolling resistance was reduced by 8%, and tire life increased by 4%.

A new rubber compound with increased wear resistance was developed for the tire, created using the patented Nano Balance Technology, which allows to change the properties of compounds, while the pattern with large and stiff blocks improves the evenness of load distribution, which reduces deformations of the tread and increases its service life. In addition, the bending lamellas in the blocks prevent the concentration of pressure for its more even distribution, and additional slots in the shoulder areas dissipate transverse loads, preventing uneven wear.
Nanoenergy M648 EV tires are also made using the e-balance technology, which increases fuel efficiency and durability of tires, including by stabilizing their shape, and the bead wire is made from recycled materials, making the tires more environmentally friendly.
In Japan, the tires will be available starting from September 22 in the size 275/70 R22.5.
