RMIT uses recycled rubber in concrete mix
A team of engineers from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT) in Australia has successfully replaced 100% of the traditional aggregate used in concrete with rubber from end-of-life tires, while still meeting building standards.
By replacing gravel and crushed stone, the team believes the more environmentally friendly and lighter concrete will reduce production and transportation costs, as well as contribute to a circular economy.
So far, a small amount of recycled tires had already been used to replace concrete aggregate, but attempts to replace 100% of the materials had resulted in weak concrete mixes that did not meet building standards.
