Pirelli recalls two thousand tires with incorrect labeling

Pirelli is starting a recall in the US of 2023 passenger tires Pirelli Cinturato P7 of the Run-Flat category in size 245/45 R18, produced at the Slatina plant (Romania) from the 14th week of 2017 to the sixth week of 2019. The MOE marking and the star symbol indicate that the tires were homologated by Daimler and BMW, and 422 tires were installed on 211 Mercedes E-Class cars delivered to the US. The remaining tires were sold on the secondary market.

The reason for the recall is that the tires have an incorrect maximum permissible pressure indication - 340 kPa instead of the correct 350 kPa (3.4 and 3.5 bar, respectively) - as a result of which the tires do not meet the requirements of the US federal standard.

The incorrectly marked tires became known in 2019, when Daimler informed the Korean Institute of Automotive Research and Testing (KATRI) about this, indicating that the tires did not meet the specified specifications in the "push-out" tests.

The automaker passed the data to the German branch of Pirelli, and the tire company applied to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) with a request to recognize the incorrect marking as an insufficient reason for a recall, but in 2022 it received a refusal. In Pirelli, they appealed the decision of the NHTSA, and in 2025 the appeal was rejected, and as a result, the recall procedure was initiated.

Now Pirelli is working with Daimler to identify the owners of cars equipped with tires with incorrect markings. After that, the tires will be replaced with similar ones, but with the correct maximum pressure indication.
