Pirelli to supply tyres for the Freelander 8 crossover
Pirelli has become the exclusive tyre supplier for the hybrid Freelander 8, the first model in the revived brand's lineup, which Chery and Jaguar Land Rover will initially launch in the Chinese market before introducing it in other regions worldwide.
Tyre development, marked with the FL designation, began at the early stages of the vehicle’s design. Pirelli notes that special attention was required to meet increased demands for load capacity and acoustic comfort. Due to the Freelander’s higher weight, the tyre construction was reinforced to ensure reliable and safe performance under various road conditions. The tread pattern was also refined to reduce cabin noise, while a specially formulated rubber compound helped lower rolling resistance and improve energy efficiency. The tyres carry the Elect marking, which Pirelli uses for products designed specifically for electric and hybrid vehicles, and feature the PNCS (Pirelli Noise Cancelling System) technology that reduces noise levels through a porous polyurethane insert inside the tyre cavity.
In the Chinese market, customers will have access to Pirelli P Zero and Scorpion tyres (in sizes 285/45 R22 and 275/50 R21, respectively). The P Zero features an optimised internal structure that, according to the manufacturer, enhances high-speed handling and ensures effective braking performance.

In turn, the Pirelli Scorpion was specifically developed for SUVs and off-road vehicles with a focus on improving grip in challenging conditions. Pirelli states that these tyres are ideally suited for both urban traffic and long-distance driving, with their high performance confirmed by the quality certification mark from independent organisation TÜV SÜD.

In overseas markets, in addition to the Pirelli Scorpion, all-season Scorpion MS tyres (in size 285/45 R22) will also be offered. These are made from a special rubber compound that enhances grip on both dry and wet surfaces, while a lightweight yet durable casing improves steering precision and ride comfort. Additionally, optimised pressure distribution within the contact patch ensures even wear throughout the tyre’s service life, the company states.

Engineers employed artificial intelligence and virtual simulation technologies, which not only significantly reduced development time and saved resources but also “ensure that tyres designed specifically for the Freelander 8 will be reliable under all conditions.” Development was carried out at Pirelli’s research and development center in Shandong, China, where the company’s manufacturing plant responsible for production is also located.
