Features of chain operation

The use of anti-skid chains is a necessity on sections with deep snow, where the tread of a winter tire simply can't cope. Like any product for use on a vehicle, anti-skid chains have both advantages and disadvantages. Today, we'll break down the main nuances of using anti-skid chains and how they affect the vehicle as a whole and the tires in particular.

Anti-skid chains are usually sold in pairs and installed on the driving wheels. This meets the legislative requirements for continental Europe and mountain roads. Nevertheless, for some vehicles, it is recommended to use four chains for improved traction. Some drivers prefer to use two sets of chains to achieve maximum grip with the road surface.

The selection of chains depends on the type of vehicle. For crossovers and SUVs, chains with a link height of 12 to 16 mm are recommended, while for passenger cars, chains with a link height of 6 to 12 mm are suitable. The height of the chain link determines the minimum clearance required for proper installation. However, it's worth noting that European chain manufacturers often recommend choosing chains based on the vehicle's make and model, rather than just the wheel size.

For some vehicles with air suspension or minimal wheel clearance, the use of standard chains may be impossible.

Do chains damage tires?
Yes, of course. And not only tires but also wheels and other vehicle components.
In the example, you see how chains can damage vehicle components and alloy wheels. To avoid this, you should select chains from proven manufacturers and follow the size recommendations. Particular attention should be paid to the recommendations for use on expensive vehicles with minimal clearances, as otherwise, the use of chains can result in costly repairs.

Well, and, of course, one can't forget that anti-skid chains can only be used on snowy surfaces at a minimum speed. Manufacturers agree on a limit of 50 km/h, but we recommend reducing the maximum speed by half, to 25 km/h. Even in this case, tire damage cannot be avoided. It should be understood that a chain is a foreign object that has a constant impact on the same area of the tire during movement, so minor abrasions will occur in any case, but with prolonged use or heavy loading, the tires can fail altogether. This is especially true for truck tires.
