Lada Iskra will receive a tire pressure monitoring system
Lada Iskra will be the first model from AvtoVAZ to be equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system, according to the Itelma group of companies, a Russian developer and manufacturer of electronic solutions for the automotive industry.
Currently, TPMS is not even installed on the flagship Lada Vesta, but the Iskra (which will take the place between Vesta and Granta) will use an indirect tire pressure monitoring system (iTPMS).
As previously reported, Itelma's Deputy Technical Director, Arthur Latypov, said that iTPMS makes measurements using the software of the ESC control unit. According to him, the system "uses only the wheel speed sensors used in the ESC system. Based on the rotation frequency of each wheel, the control unit calculates its relative radius. If a wheel has low pressure, it rotates faster, its resonant frequency decreases, and its amplitude increases. Then the driver is warned about the low pressure."
There are also direct tire pressure monitoring systems (dTPMS) that use sensors installed in the tires and working on power elements. The information is transmitted to the TPMS control unit, analyzed, and if the pressure is below the necessary level, a signal lights up on the dashboard, Latypov noted.
He also said that since iTPMS is part of the ESC system, it does not require additional maintenance and repair, which means that the costs of car owners are reduced. "But, unlike dTPMS, it cannot be additionally equipped with a car after purchase," Latypov pointed out. "And the accuracy of indirect measurements of iTPMS is lower, especially with uneven tire wear. And it also needs to be re-trained when replacing or inflating tires."
Serial production of Lada Iskra is expected to start in April 2025, and Itelma reports that 98 prototypes have been manufactured, which have passed 84 crash tests and tests on Russian roads, "which allowed us to maximize the adaptation of the new car to operating conditions and achieve its high reliability". TPMS systems will be installed on all versions of the new product from AvtoVAZ.
Itelma includes companies with a total staff of over 3,000 people, a third of whom are engaged in new developments.
