Kumho Tire has announced that it has completed the development of a digital twin (DT) system for tires and is actively working on transforming the product development process using the latest technologies.

DT technology allows for a transition from the existing method of developing tires, which requires creating physical prototypes, to creating tires in a digital space. The new system automatically generates multiple versions of virtual prototypes, predicts their performance, selects the optimal option using artificial intelligence, and then conducts virtual testing.

At Kumho, they note that when creating tires, predicting the characteristics of the tread pattern, rubber compound, and tire design is crucial for meeting requirements such as rolling resistance, braking performance, durability, ride comfort, noise, and more. The new process is expected to significantly accelerate tire development, enable efficient improvement of their characteristics, and reduce the company's costs.

"Kumho Tire is contributing to the transformation of mobility to make it safer and more comfortable," said Kim Ki-oon, the company's executive director in charge of virtual modeling technology implementation. "We strive to develop high-tech products based on advanced developments and are making every effort to maintain our technological competitiveness."

In the future, Kumho plans to adapt the digital twin technology for use in a cloud environment, allowing developers to apply it at any time and in any location. Additionally, the company plans to improve the tire characteristic prediction system based on big data and will also use a driving simulator.

"To respond promptly to new trends in the rapidly changing mobility industry, Kumho Tire began its digital transformation of the tire development process in 2021 and is working on creating 'smart' tires with built-in sensors and expanding the use of computer-aided design technologies," Kumho added.
