How Russian drivers get rid of old tires

Ikon Tyres conducted a survey to determine how Russian motorists decide what to do with used tires, and it was found that less than half (47%) of respondents comply with the requirements of environmentally friendly disposal. The results of the survey are reported by Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

According to the study, 39.9% of drivers deliberately leave old tires in places where their disposal is guaranteed, such as gas stations or collection points, and another 7% use trade-in programs that also imply recycling. At the same time, almost every third participant in the survey (31.8%) said that they simply leave the tires at the tire service, not caring what happens to them next, and 11.6% stated that they use old tires in the household, i.e., create flower beds and so on, and every tenth (9.8%) admitted that they throw away tires along with household waste or take them to landfills, including unauthorized ones, although all this is a violation of the law.

Commenting on the survey results, car expert, member of the Public Council under the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Igor Morzharetto, noted that "cases of fines for improper disposal of tires are recorded in different regions, but it is extremely difficult to assess how actively such measures are applied throughout the country. I don't think such punishments are widespread. And it's a pity! After all, as this study has once again shown, the problem is serious."

For leaving old tires in inappropriate places, the Code of Administrative Offenses of the Russian Federation provides for fines ranging from 1 to 2 thousand rubles for individuals and from 10 to 20 thousand for officials, while for legal entities, a penalty is provided in the form of a fine ranging from 100 to 250 thousand rubles or administrative suspension of activities for up to 90 days.
