Tread depth and mileage

The deeper the tread, the more resourceful it is! Is that so?

Not quite. Today, we'll delve into this question in more detail and try to explain why the resource of tires is a more complex issue.

Tread depth is primarily a feature of the tread pattern and the tasks set for the tire directly affect what type of tread pattern and tread depth will be used in each tire model.

Off-road tires of the A/T and M/T classes have the deepest tread in the passenger segment. Some models reach a depth of up to 17 mm, while track tires can have a tread pattern no deeper than 4 mm. The tasks set for tires are different. But if in these diametrically opposite segments everything is clear, then what about tires for everyday use? Exactly the same. The resource is not related to the tread depth at all. The rubber compound has a radical impact on the resource. It is the ratio in which the manufacturer produced the final rubber compound and the components used that affects the resource.

However, it's not worth placing all the responsibility for the durability of the tire on the manufacturer. Car owners are also responsible for the tire resource. What should you pay attention to first?

Size Compliance

Pay attention to the recommendations of the car manufacturer. The resource, like the characteristics, largely depends on the loads that are placed on the tires while driving. The desire to install wider or higher tires can affect the resource.

Compliance with Recommended Pressure

This is, without a doubt, the main rule. Any uneven type of wear or damage in most cases is the result of incorrect pressure in the tire. We regularly write about the need to maintain pressure. It should be exactly the one recommended by the car manufacturer – neither more nor less...

Driving Style

It should be remembered that we ourselves regulate the speed of tread wear. It's our driving style, this is a rule worth remembering. Any sharp acceleration or braking entails a cost – wear. This is an unshakeable rule, and if you are a fan of fast and sharp driving, you will have to pay for it.

Also, remember the main thing. A worn-out tread inevitably leads to difficulties in handling on wet pavement. The tread pattern is created for one purpose only – to drain the contact patch. There is no pattern, and there is nothing to drain. Remember this and adjust your driving style according to the condition of your tires.
