Giti equips truck tires with RFID tags
Giti Tire has announced that it has begun the "digitalization process" of its range of truck and bus tires in the European market and will install radio frequency (RFID) tags on the sidewalls of tires for their identification at the level of individual product units throughout their entire service life.
The information will be available for reading at all stages from production, quality control, transportation, sales, and operation to the stage of tread renewal and the end of the tire's service life. Information will also be collected using the TIS (Tire Information Service) system, created by the non-profit organization GDSO (Global Data Service for Tyres and Automotive Components), which is engaged in standardizing and simplifying data exchange in the tire industry.
GDSO's full members include 12 premium- and mid-range tire manufacturers that have teamed up to develop a unified global tire data standard and create technical solutions for collecting information from participating companies.
The European Tire and Rim Technical Organization (ETRTO) created the first working group to develop the TIS system in 2017, and Giti joined the initiative in 2019. GDSO was established in 2022, and in 2023, the Singaporean company became a full member of the organization.
The first Giti truck tires with RFID tags on the European market will be the Giti GSR237 Evo and Giti GDR675 Evo, two new models for regional and long-haul transportation, which are characterized by reduced rolling resistance. In addition, the Giti GDM687 and Giti GAM838 tires for mixed operating conditions, which are scheduled to go on sale in early 2025, will also be "chipped". All four new products debuted at The Tire Cologne 2024 exhibition in Germany, and announcements about other tires that will be equipped with RFID tags, including the new Ecoroad line, will be made later.

A Giti representative also adds that "digitalization is a catalyst for the development of the tire industry, while the ability to track and exchange information will be the key to implementing the principles of a circular economy".
