The EU has maintained additional duties on truck tires from China
The European Commission has extended the validity period of additional duties on the import of truck and bus tires from China. Starting from January 15, 2025, anti-dumping and countervailing duties of 0-35.75 and 3.75-57.28 euros per tire, respectively, have been established, the commission reported.
The EC's investigation confirmed that imports had caused significant harm to the European industry, while the duties will help restore "equal conditions" for local manufacturers. Additionally, the commission concluded that there is a high likelihood that, in the event of the duties being lifted, there will be a significant increase in dumping imports from China, primarily due to the country's large surplus production capacity. Regarding anti-subsidy duties, the EC stated that European manufacturers have lost market share due to imports from several countries, including Thailand, Vietnam, Turkey, and China.
An anti-dumping duty on imports of truck and bus tires from China was introduced in the EU on May 4, 2018, and the same year, an additional amendment on countervailing duties was approved. In 2022, the duties were lifted after a court case by the China Rubber Industry Association (CRIA) and the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Metals, Minerals and Chemicals (CCCMC), and in 2023, the European Commission reintroduced the tariffs.
According to Eurostat, during the initial investigation, Chinese imports accounted for a 21.3% share of the European market, while the new tariffs have reduced this figure to 5.4%.
