Continental to halt truck tire production in India

German Continental has announced that it is leaving the Indian market for truck and bus tires and will stop producing tire products of this type at its plant in Modipuram (Uttar Pradesh state), after which it will focus on the segment of tires for passenger and light commercial vehicles.

In Continental, they emphasized that in connection with the reduction of truck tire production, they will provide assistance and support to employees who will lose their jobs, and, in particular, career counseling will be conducted, as well as an examination of potential employment opportunities, including within the company. The number of employees affected by Continental's decision is not specified.

Continental's statement also says that the reorganization is aimed at ensuring the company's viability in India in the long term.

"In response to changing demand in the local market, Continental is focusing on further developing its range and production to take advantage of future opportunities in the premium passenger tire segment," the company noted, adding that the decision was made after a thorough analysis of the business to strengthen competitiveness in the Asia-Pacific region.

It is also noted that the Indian truck tire market is highly competitive, and maintaining demand for Continental products, which belong to the premium segment, has become a serious problem.

"For this reason, the production of Continental radial tires for trucks and buses will be stopped in June 2025," Continental reported, emphasizing that India remains a strategically important market for the tire division of the concern.

The plant in Modipuram was opened in 1974 by the Indian company Modi Rubber with the technical support of Continental, which acquired the enterprise in 2012.
