What are the dangers of "white walls"
Owners of retro cars try to give them more individuality by repeating elements that were popular in the past. One of these is, without a doubt, tires with white sidewalls. Previously, this was due to the technological process of assembly and composition of tires. The familiar black color of tires is given by soot, which was added only over time.
Nowadays, tires with white sidewalls are produced exclusively to meet the demand of retro car owners. They are hard to find and, at the same time, significantly more expensive. That's why so-called "whitewalls" have appeared. These are rubber overlays that can be installed on any tires, regardless of the car model. But technically, this solution is not without its drawbacks.
First of all, it should be noted that "whitewalls" are installed at the expense of the attachment between the tire's rim ring and the wheel disk, which affects the reliability of maintaining internal pressure. Therefore, according to the instructions that come with these "whitewalls", a tube must be installed in the tire. The tube, in turn, can damage the internal sealing layer, and further operation of the tire without a tube may be impossible.
The second significant drawback of "whitewalls" is that they do not fit tightly to the tire's sidewall. Over time, dirt accumulates between them, and in the winter, snow gets stuck. The dirt, in turn, having abrasive properties, gradually damages the sidewall, often erasing part of the markings.
On the whole, this type of tuning leads to an imbalance of the wheels. And if at first, the problems can be eliminated on a balancing machine, then later on, it is affected by both the deformation of the "whitewalls" themselves and the dirt that gets stuck under them. Some car owners try to eliminate this by gluing them to the tire's sidewall, which is a very bad idea, as the glue destroys the rubber, changing its physicochemical properties.
As you can see, the attractive appearance is all the advantages, along with significant drawbacks. Many car owners accept the rules of the game, since they use such cars for rare trips. What you should definitely not do is use "whitewalls" for daily trips.
