The Pirelli Ice Friction winter tire is specifically designed for regions with extremely low negative temperatures and a prolonged "snowy" season. The model is intended for passenger cars whose owners prefer high manageability and safety on icy and snowy roads without the use of studs. The tire belongs to the category of friction, i.e. non-studded winter models, and is the result of many years of research by the Italian brand in the field of polymer compounds and microstructural adhesion.
The tread is made according to a directional scheme with V-shaped grooves, which effectively remove water, slush and snow from the contact patch using the rotation of the wheel. Another important feature of the tread is the presence of a large number of small blocks that, together with lamellas, form numerous multidirectional edges. This significantly improves the traction properties on wet and snowy surfaces.
However, the main technological solution of the model was the Ice Friction Surface Technology system, which uses microscopic particles in the rubber compound that create increased friction with the ice surface. They act like tiny studs, providing reliable traction without the need for metal elements. This solution significantly reduces the noise level and wear on the road surface, while remaining just as effective as classic studded tires.
The rubber compound combines highly dispersed silica with natural oils and special polymers that are resistant to extremely low temperatures. Thanks to this, the tire retains its elasticity at frosts down to minus 50 degrees, without losing its grip properties. The increased silica content reduces rolling resistance, improving fuel efficiency and driving comfort.
Key features of Pirelli Ice Friction:
- directional tread with deep grooves and numerous small blocks and lamellas is effective on any winter surface;
- technology with micro-particles that increase traction on ice;
- compound with additives maintains flexibility in extreme cold.
