The winter studded tire Nokian Hakkapeliitta Q is one of the most successful examples that the absence of studs on the tread is not a big problem when driving on ice.
High degree of lamination
One of the key factors determining the excellent traction characteristics of this tire on ice is the increased density of the lamella arrangement. They are separated from each other by a few millimeters, which was achieved due to the special design of the walls. They contain many irregularities that not only fix the lamella in the open position when contacting the road surface, but also limit the mobility of the block.

The longitudinal rib located in the center of the tread is a very rigid continuous element. Its increased resistance to deformations gives the tire excellent precision in handling. Similar properties characterize the shoulder blocks.
