Unlike other winter tires from the Land of the Rising Sun, the Nitto NT SPK was designed with the specific climatic features of Northern Europe and Russia in mind. In combination with advanced technologies and materials widely used in the design of this model, this made it possible to perfectly adapt it to use in truly harsh and cold winters. One of the most significant advantages of this tire is its reliable traction in any weather and road conditions.
Unconventional compound composition
One of the factors determining the high technical performance of this tire is the unique physical and chemical properties of the tread compound. It differs from the traditional set of components that make up its composition. One of them is crushed walnut shell, ground into small fractions. During movement, they create a multitude of so-called "micro-studs". They significantly improve the grip on ice and packed snow, effectively complementing the action of the studs.
Another component not often used by other manufacturers is bamboo soot. With its help, Japanese tire makers have given the rubber mixture the ability to absorb moisture from the road surface. By drying the contact patch in this way, this compound significantly improves the traction and grip characteristics, especially on icy coatings.
Three-dimensional lamellas
Another design feature of this model that determines its high performance on ice is the lamellas that the tread is literally dotted with. During movement, these miniature elements form several thousand additional gripping edges. Each of them is located at a small angle to the direction of movement. Thanks to this, the tire demonstrates a very short braking distance, especially on wet asphalt, ice, and packed snow.
All these advantages were achieved without compromising controllability thanks to the three-dimensional design of the lamella walls. They are equipped with numerous protrusions and recesses that limit the mobility of the blocks, both in the longitudinal and transverse direction, fixing the lamellas in the open position when contacting the road. This gives the tire additional stability on any hard and smooth surface, improving its controllability on them.
Two rubber compound compositions
This tire is equipped with a tread having an asymmetrical design. It is divided into two halves - inner and outer. They differ not only in the arrangement, shape, and size of the elements located on them but also in the composition of the rubber mixture. The inner side of the tread is made from a more elastic compound. This further improves the softness of the ride and also increases traction during acceleration and braking. In turn, the outer side of the tread features a more rigid rubber mixture, thanks to which this model demonstrates improved handling during turns and maneuvering.
Extended temperature range
The next feature of the rubber compound of this tire is the extended temperature range. Due to the fact that it consists of more than half of silica, the tire remains elastic at very strong frosts and demonstrates excellent wear resistance during thaws.
Improved traction in bad weather
As mentioned earlier, this model is equipped with a tread having an asymmetrical design, divided into two functional zones. The outer side is characterized by a different structure of the drainage system. Most of the drainage grooves are located here. Almost all of them are located at a sharp angle to the direction of movement and have a significant width and depth. The combination of such features in the design makes it possible to effectively remove not only water but also heavier meltwater from the contact patch. This significantly improves the tire's resistance to aquaplaning and slushplaning, demonstrating reliable and stable traction with the road at the same time.
Main features of the Nitto NT SPK tire
- unique compound characteristics with bamboo soot and crushed walnut shell, which significantly improves traction on ice and packed snow;
- a 14-row stud system provides confident behavior on any icy roads;
- three-dimensional lamellas form several thousand additional gripping edges, and due to the limitation of block mobility, they provide reliable and predictable handling;
- two rubber compound compositions - a rigid compound on the outer side of the tread improves handling during maneuvering and turns, and a more elastic inner side provides comfort and improved traction during acceleration and braking;
- excellent elasticity even at very low temperatures due to the increased silica content;
- improved resistance to slushplaning is ensured by the location of the drainage grooves against the direction of movement and their large size on the outer side of the tread.
