Michelin Pilot Sport 5 Energy – a special tyre designed for the passenger electric vehicles and "hybrids" sector. The model's development took five years and underwent testing in conditions close to extreme. The tyre participated in a record-breaking endurance test with Mercedes-AMG, where it confirmed its capability on distances inaccessible to most competitors.

Bi-compound architecture

The main feature of the model is the dual structure of the tread. Here, the principle of functional separation of contact zones was applied:
- the central zone features a high-adhesion polymer responsible for longitudinal and lateral grip, both on dry and wet surfaces. This is where the confidence in entering a turn and sharp braking is born;
- the "shoulder" zones have a fundamentally new recipe with reduced hysteresis. This means that the tyre spends less energy on deformation during rolling, reducing resistance and increasing the electric vehicle's range.

This configuration allowed the tyre to achieve class A in the EU label, both in terms of wet grip and energy efficiency.

Increased tread life

A traditional problem with sports tyres is accelerated wear. Aggressive compound and high loads are ideal conditions for abrasive wear. The tyre solved this problem at the level of contact patch distribution. The internal structure optimizes the contact patch shape so that the forces of acceleration, braking, and turning are distributed across the tread as evenly as possible. No local overheating, no "eating away" of the centre or edges.

Quietness and efficiency

For electric vehicles and hybrids, every hundredth of a percent of rolling resistance matters. Slim Belt Technology is a revised architecture of the breaker. The mass of the reinforcing layer was reduced without losing strength characteristics, which directly reduced friction losses inside the tyre.

At the same time, the sizes and angles of the tread blocks were optimized to actively dampen noise. In the car's cabin, this work is felt as a noticeable reduction in background hum at highway speeds.
