The Michelin Pilot Preceda PP2 summer tire owes its existence to the vast experience accumulated by this French tire giant over the years of cooperation with leading racing series, including Formula 1. This model was specifically designed for powerful luxury cars and combines sporty handling with a high level of comfort. Such balance was achieved thanks to the widespread application of a number of proprietary technologies.
3-zone asymmetric tread pattern
This model owes its versatility to a great extent to the new asymmetric tread pattern, which consists of three main functional zones. The central zone consists of three longitudinal ribs, each of which has a very rigid and solid structure. This made it possible to give the tire exceptional directional stability when moving at any speed. The shoulder zone, located on the outside of the tread, consists of many separate blocks, the massive size of which provides stability when cornering.
The shoulder zone of the tread, located on its inner side, performs mainly drainage functions, diverting water from the contact patch, thereby ensuring reliable traction on wet roads. A common feature of both shoulder zones of the tread is special reinforcing ribs that increase the stiffness of this part of the tread, thereby improving handling characteristics.
New rubber compound composition
This tire uses a fundamentally different rubber compound. More precisely, several of them. The lower layer has a higher stiffness, which ensures the tire's resistance to dynamic deformation that occurs during movement. In turn, the outer layer of the Michelin Pilot Preceda PP2 has increased elasticity due to special additives, which allows the tread to more closely fit all the irregularities on the road surface. As a result, it was possible not only to significantly improve traction but also to provide a higher level of comfort due to the effective smoothing of bumps from irregularities. In addition, the rubber compound of this model has an increased content of silicon-containing components, which improved the tire's grip on wet roads, reduced rolling resistance, and increased resistance to abrasive wear.
Excellent traction on wet roads
A characteristic feature of this tire is its excellent resistance to aquaplaning when driving even at high speeds. This was achieved thanks to the presence of four longitudinal drainage grooves in the central part of the tread, the size of which allows them to hold large volumes of water. This made it possible to radically solve the issue of water drainage from the contact patch.
High level of comfort
During the development of the tread pattern of this tire, computer modeling tools were widely used, replacing millions of kilometers of real tests. As a result, the tire received a tread, the blocks of which are arranged in such a way as to minimize the likelihood of resonance noise. In combination with the multi-layer structure, both of the tread and the carcass, this made the tire not only quiet but also extremely soft on the go.
