The Michelin Pilot Alpin PA5 SUV winter tire is designed for SUVs and crossovers. It is a modified version of the same model for passenger cars, differing in the design of the carcass. It has been adapted taking into account the increased weight of all-wheel drive vehicles. It was developed with European winter weather conditions in mind. It is characterized by stability on snowy surfaces, high-speed stability on dry asphalt, excellent braking efficiency, as well as fuel economy and long service life.
Directional Tread Pattern
The tread part of the tire is made in the classic V-shaped design for winter tires. Its key feature is the small size of the blocks and their combination into groups of 4 elements each. As a result, very long edges are formed, with which the tire effectively grips the slippery surface. It is worth noting the aggressive angle of inclination of these elements, which improves cross-country grip.
Negative Tread Profile
In a side projection and without load, the tread profile is concave. This feature allows the width of the contact zone with the road to be significantly increased. Its shape is close to square, which improves not only grip but also stability. This solution optimizes the distribution of external load on the contact zone, ensuring even wear of the tread, thereby increasing its service life.
Updated Lamellae
All tread blocks have several narrow slits. When in contact with the road surface, they open, forming sharp edges. Several thousand such elements help the tire to effectively grip even the smallest irregularities. The Z-shaped form of the lamellae, limiting the transverse mobility of the blocks, provides stability of the coupling properties and faster and more accurate transmission of lateral acceleration forces to the steering wheel. This greatly simplifies the process of controlling the car in difficult conditions.
Special Rubber Compound
The tire tread is made of a compound whose characteristics were specially selected with regard to road features in winter. One of them is the range of operating temperatures of the rubber compound, shifted closer to 0 degrees Celsius. The compound includes so-called finely dispersed silica and functional polymers that affect the mixture at the molecular level. This made it possible to additionally increase elasticity while maintaining high tear and tensile strength.
