The winter non-studded tire Goodyear UltraGrip +SUV is one of the latest developments of one of the world leaders in tire production. As the name suggests, this model is designed primarily for passenger cars with increased cross-country ability, including crossovers and pickups. The wide range of sizes, including about two dozen of the most popular sizes, allows this tire to be used on most modern models of passenger cars that are classified as SUVs. Like any novelty, the North American manufacturer has applied all its latest achievements to this tire.
One of the distinctive features of most passenger winter tires is a V-shaped tread with a directional symmetric pattern. This model did not become an exception. Its tread is designed according to one of the company's most famous technologies, namely V-Tred. This term hides a directional V-shaped tread design. This scheme of arrangement of tread ribs and blocks more effectively removes not only water but also snow and mud from the contact patch, providing more reliable traction, especially on slippery surfaces. When moving, water and snow are displaced into longitudinal drainage grooves, and then directed into transverse channels, through which they are output outward.
At the same time, the transverse channels are directed backward relative to the direction of movement, which significantly increases the efficiency of the drainage system. Excellent traction and grip on slippery surfaces are provided by a multitude of tread blocks, around which drainage grooves and channels pass. Another significant advantage of the V-shaped tread design is excellent directional stability, which is provided by a wide and rigid central rib formed by arrow-shaped blocks. Also, it is impossible not to note another advantage of such a tread - stable dimensions of the contact patch area, regardless of the type of coverage and road conditions. This allows you to move more confidently on any roads.
Another innovation of the Goodyear UltraGrip +SUV tire was the 3D-BIS technology, which, according to the manufacturer, is revolutionary today. The technology of a three-dimensional system of mutual blocking of tread blocks is aimed at creating many additional edges of engagement while simultaneously maintaining the rigidity of each individual block with the help of special lamellas located on the surface of each block. At the moment of contact with the road surface, the lamellas, in contact with each other with convex bubbles, are firmly fixed in the recesses on the opposite side. As a result, the blocks divided by lamellas into separate sections become more rigid. As a result, it was possible to significantly improve the grip with the icy surface, while maintaining other operational characteristics at a high level.
The composition of the rubber mixture was selected based on the conditions of winter operation of the tire. The main changes are associated with an increase in the content of silicon-containing components - silica - in the composition of the rubber mixture. Silicon dioxide made it possible to significantly improve the grip with a slippery coating due to increased elasticity. At the same time, the tire remains sufficiently elastic even at very low temperatures. In addition, silica contributes to improved tread resistance to abrasion, which led to an increase in the life of the tire.
