The Goodyear EfficientGrip summer tire is one of the most successful attempts to create a tire with improved fuel efficiency and increased lifespan. This model, produced by one of the leaders in the tire industry, is available in several dozen sizes from 14 to 20 inches, making it suitable for most modern passenger cars of various classes.
This tire is the first model from this North American tire giant to be created using the FuelSaving Technology, which combines the latest scientific achievements. Thanks to a unique combination of various technological developments, it was possible to achieve a significant reduction in rolling resistance, which directly affects fuel efficiency. Notably, the tire features a lightweight carcass, a special heat-reducing layer, a new rubber compound, and an optimized manufacturing process. As a result, the tire allows for significant fuel savings, reducing carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere.
Reduced weight of the American tire
The use of new-generation materials in the carcass design has made it possible to significantly reduce the weight of the tire. Compared to other summer passenger tire models, the company's specialists have achieved a weight reduction of up to 10%. One of the main advantages of the new synthetic materials is their lighter weight, which has not only reduced rolling resistance but also led to a decrease in heat generation. Another design innovation is the lower sidewall curvature and reduced sidewall thickness, which has further reduced the tire's weight and, consequently, its rolling resistance.
CoolCushion technology
This term refers to a new patented thermoplastic layer used as a reinforcing element, partially replacing the carbon black mixture widely used to reduce heat generation. The additional under-tread layer has not only reduced heat generation but also played a significant role in reducing excess weight.
As is known, the rubber compound has a huge impact on the tire's basic performance characteristics. That's why the company's specialists carefully selected the rubber compound, the development of which often requires years of scientific research in the field of materials. As a result, they obtained a rubber compound that not only contains polymers of the latest generation but also special reinforcing and structuring components. Thanks to the improved rubber compound, it was possible to achieve excellent energy-saving characteristics, which ultimately led to a reduction in rolling resistance.
Tread design
In addition to achieving exceptional fuel efficiency, the developers of this model aimed to provide reliable and stable handling on various road surfaces while maintaining a high level of comfort. To achieve this, the tire's tread was equipped with an asymmetric directional tread pattern consisting of five longitudinal ribs. It's also worth noting that computer-aided design tools were widely used in the development of the tread. One of the most notable results of their work was the optimal distribution of load across the contact patch, which made it possible to significantly reduce the likelihood of uneven wear.
As is known, one of the distinctive features of all passenger tires from this manufacturer is their high resistance to aquaplaning. To ensure this characteristic, the tread of the Goodyear EfficientGrip tire was equipped with four longitudinal drainage grooves that effectively handle the removal of a large amount of water from the contact patch.
On the surface of the longitudinal ribs, there are special multifunctional lamellas. Thanks to the optimal arrangement of the additional edges formed by them, more reliable traction is ensured on various road surfaces, including wet road surfaces.
Regarding the traction on dry surfaces, their high level is largely ensured by the massive shoulder areas. Due to their high structural rigidity, the tire demonstrates excellent stability and stability of behavior in various driving modes.
Another component that received special attention is the noise level while driving. Its reduction was achieved through the optimized inclination of the tread blocks and their arrangement with varying pitches relative to each other. As a result, it was possible to achieve not only a significant reduction in noise level but also to minimize the risk of uneven wear.
Key features of the Goodyear EfficientGrip tire
- Unique fuel-saving technology, which, due to weight reduction, the use of a special under-tread layer, and the application of new-generation materials, made it possible to achieve a significant reduction in fuel consumption and heat generation;
- Improved rubber compound, containing silicon-based components and SRB polymers, ensured excellent tread durability and good traction on wet roads;
- Variable placement of tread blocks in combination with optimized angles between them made it possible to significantly reduce the noise level.
