Summer tire Barnaul VLI 5 in the days of the USSR was the only choice for owners of off-road vehicles VAZ-2121. Other models were not offered by the Soviet tire industry, as it was believed that a tire with a diagonal tread pattern was the best solution to the problems of rural residents, the main category of buyers of this car. "Toothed" tread
The design of the tread pattern has remained unchanged throughout the production of the tire - open in the shoulder areas and closed in the central part. On the edges, there are composite trapezoidal blocks, divided by a narrow groove into two unequal parts. Due to their height and location, these elements are essentially mud hooks that, thanks to their toothed shape, literally grip the ground, allowing the tire to transmit the maximum torque from the engine to it. On the highway, the triangular configuration of both parts of the shoulder blocks prevents lateral skidding and improves steering accuracy.
The central part of the tire's tread is a very wide longitudinal rib of a zigzag shape. It also has a composite structure, being divided by narrow drainage grooves into two equal parts. Each of them is a series of blocks connected by a rigid bridge. Such a design reduces rolling resistance and noise level, while providing a contact patch with numerous gripping edges, effective primarily on slippery wet surfaces.
Resistant to aquaplaning
Thanks to the "off-road" tread design, this tire is extremely resistant to aquaplaning. The risk of this effect is extremely low even in the most unfavorable weather conditions. In the shoulder areas, the blocks are located at a gigantic distance from each other. And the more closed central part effectively prevents the tire from floating due to the numerous drainage grooves, one of which surrounds the tread exactly along its center.
Improved compound characteristics
The model currently being produced is significantly different from its first years of production. And noticeably, since the most modern technologies are used at the enterprise where it is produced. In particular, the production of the compound is carried out on fully automated equipment with computerized control. In addition, its composition has been significantly changed, which has had a positive impact on the tire's main driving qualities, primarily its grip on wet surfaces, significantly improving them.
