The Pirelli Scorpion MX Mid Hard 554 motorcycle tire is one of the latest developments from the Italian manufacturer. Unlike most other models with the MX abbreviation in their name, this tire was specifically designed for supercross. As a rule, these competitions take place on sufficiently hard surfaces that have quite specific requirements for tires.
New sizes
One of the distinctive features of this model is the size range. The front tire is offered in size 90/100-21, and the rear tire is 125/80-19. This was enough to provide the tire with a number of important advantages. First of all, this is stability and ease of handling, as well as a reduction in unsprung masses in combination with an increase in the size of the contact patch.
Open design of the tread pattern
Both the front and rear tires are equipped with virtually identical tread patterns, which differ from each other only in size. In both cases, they have an open design containing a large number of grip edges formed by numerous pyramidal blocks. In the central part, they form very extended transverse edges, thanks to which the tire demonstrates excellent traction and coupling characteristics in the longitudinal direction.
In turn, the shoulder areas also contain many individual blocks. However, they are arranged in a checkerboard pattern, which ensures reliable coupling even at significant motorcycle lean angles.
Reinforced carcass
Since this model is designed for supercross, its carcass has been not only significantly strengthened but also lightened due to the widespread use of synthetic materials. In particular, the steel cord has given way to polyester fibers with excellent mechanical strength. In addition, the breaker layer contains nylon, thanks to which the tire not only "holds" its shape but also provides protection against punctures and cuts. Moreover, the use of a synthetic carcass has significantly reduced the likelihood of the unpleasant phenomenon of "damping effect", which has greatly simplified the process of handling the motorcycle.
