History of Origin

The first cars of the brand were produced by the Olds Motor Vehicle Company, founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. In 1901, thanks to the supply of transmissions from Dodge, the company was able to produce 635 cars. For several subsequent years, the company's products were among the best-selling in the United States. During this period, it released the Model R "Curved Dash", using the world's first assembly line. Unlike Henry Ford, Oldsmobile used a stationary conveyor, where the car being assembled remained in one place, and the workers moved from one instance to another, performing the same production operation. The presence of only one model in the product line was due to a fire at the company's plant, which destroyed almost all prototypes of new cars. The only survivor was the Model R "Curved Dash". The last instance of this car was released in 1907. In November of the following year, the company was sold to General Motors.

Years of Prosperity

The peak of the brand's popularity came in the 1970s and 1980s. During this period, the company sold over a million cars per year. The most successful was the Cutlass sedan, introduced in 1976, which became the best-selling in North America. At the same time, the popularity of the brand created a number of problems, especially in the late 1970s. At that time, each GM division was engaged in the development and production of its own 8-cylinder engines. In 1977, when the demand for Oldsmobile cars exceeded the production capacity of a number of components for them, instead of the "native" power unit, Chevrolet engines began to be used. This caused a wave of indignation among the brand's regular customers, who for years used the same spare parts, as it was a big surprise for them to find not the Rocket V8, but the Chevrolet 350 under the hood. Another reason for dissatisfaction was the diesel engines of the brand, which appeared in 1978. Despite various technical solutions aimed at increasing reliability, these 8-cylinder engines proved to be unreliable, especially when operated in cold climates. Having survived for a short time for engines, 7 years on the conveyor, they were discontinued in 1985.

1990s

After two successful decades, in the 1990s, the situation in Oldsmobile changed rapidly, the brand lost sales, dropping from a record 1 million cars in 1985 to just over 400,000 in 1993. Another aggravating factor was GM's policy, which continued to use the brand's cars as a "guinea pig", demonstrating various design options and new technologies. With rare exceptions, such as navigation systems and climate control, these solutions did not find a response from buyers. The only successful model in the 1990s was the Aurora, but its popularity created new problems. GM decided to fully utilize the success and began producing cars with a design that had common features with the Aurora. In addition, the production of popular cars in the past was gradually discontinued, and the models that replaced them had different names.
