In 1980, the company merged with the Project 4 Racing racing team, which was then headed by Ron Dennis. In addition, designer John Barnard returned to the company, one of the constructors of Formula 1 racing cars, where McLaren first applied carbon fiber composites in the manufacture of the car's monocoque. This same material was used in the brand's first civilian model, the F1, released in 1992 in a quantity of just 106 units. In 2010, the company was "spun off" from the McLaren Group, becoming an independent sports car manufacturer to attract investment for further development.
