Currently, Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S. is a French manufacturer of luxury sports cars. The company was founded in 1998 by the German Volkswagen Group and is located in the French region of Alsace. In turn, the original Bugatti brand was founded there in 1909 by Ettore Bugatti and was engaged in the production of racing and luxury cars.

Formation

In late December 1998, the German automaker Volkswagen AG established Bugatti Automobiles S.A.S., registering the company in France. At the same time, the rights to the Bugatti design and name were transferred, which were owned by Italian businessman Romano Artioli. He was engaged in the production of supercars EB 110/112 from 1987 to 1998. The first head of the recreated company was Karl-Heinz Neumann, who previously headed the division that developed and produced VW transmission systems. The Chateau St. Jean, built in 1856, a former guest house of Ettore Bugatti, was acquired to house the headquarters. Meanwhile, the original Bugatti factory was owned by Snecma, which refused to part with it. In August 2000, VW had to announce the construction of a new factory after unsuccessful negotiations. The location was chosen near the castle, a little south of it. The official opening took place in September 2005. In September 2020, Volkswagen AG unexpectedly announced the upcoming sale of the Bugatti brand and the start of negotiations with Croatian Rimac Automobili. The decision was motivated by the opinion of VW CEO Herbert Diess that Bugatti is a burden, bringing only losses. Nevertheless, in the same year, the brand delivered 77 cars to customers, announcing in January 2021 a growth in operating profit for the third year in a row. In July 2021, the Bugatti Rimac joint venture was created, with 55% of the shares going to the Croatian partner and the remaining 45% to Porsche AG.

Cars

The first model of the recreated French brand was the Veyron. The first concept car was presented in 2000. Over the next 5 years, the company worked on its refinement for serial production. The car holds several speed records for production sports cars. Its successor was the Chiron, which premiered in February 2016. It, like the previous model, was equipped with an 8-liter 16-cylinder engine, but its power increased by 1.5 times and reached 1500 horsepower. Over several years, several modifications were presented on its basis, some of which are offered as standalone models. Special tires designed for extreme loads are required for all these cars.
