History

The pace was so high that a year later, BAIC climbed to fifth place, selling over 1.7 million units, with 30% of them being commercial vehicles.

SAAB Technologies

In the late 2000s, the company, like many other Chinese automakers, faced difficulties in accessing modern technologies. A series of unsuccessful attempts to acquire financially troubled European and North American brands led BAIC to General Motors, which, after the 2008 crisis, was forced to get rid of unprofitable assets. One such asset was the Swedish SAAB. The Chinese company was able to obtain intellectual property rights to three car platforms, including the Saab 9-3 and 9-5, turbocharged engine technologies, and transmission systems. One of the results of this purchase was the appearance of the C70 model, which was sold exclusively in China.

Present Day

In 2010, the BAIC Group established a subsidiary company, BAIC Motor, which specialized in the production of passenger cars using Saab technologies. In 2015, it was announced that the partnership with the German Daimler AG would be expanded. At the same time, the production of cars under the Beijing brand began, which is still the main brand for BAIC Motor today. It is used in compact sedans U5, U7, SUVs X3, X6, X7.
